Microsoft founder Bill Gates moves on – 27 Jun 08

Gates plans to focus on the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and its work in health, vaccines and education.

Dropping out of Harvard University, Gates started the company with Paul Allen in 1975; it became publicly traded in 1986. He remained CEO until 2000, when Steve Ballmer took over.

Gates is ranked as the world’s richest man by Forbes, which estimates his net worth at $50 billion in its 2006 ranking.

He owned just over 1 billion shares of Microsoft in 2005, according to the company’s most recent filing. That amounts to 9.6 percent of shares outstanding, making him Microsoft’s largest single shareholder.

The job of Gates as chief software architect was being handled by Ray Ozzie, ever since he began heading his personally-founded charity, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Gate’s chief research and strategy officer duties will be overseen by Craig Mundie. Steve Ballmer, former Harvard classmate, will continue as CEO at the Seattle-based Microsoft.
