“Banned” Weightlifter Monika Devi takes on SAI, gets support from IWF

Monika Devi, who allegedly tested positive in a dope test, has decided to fight it out. She took on Sports Authority of India (SAI), which reportedly conducted the dope test and declared her unfit to take part in Beijing Olympics. On Wednesday, Monika reached the SAI headquarters in New Delhi and confronted its chief RK Naidu, accusing him of trying to ruin her career. Monika also alleged that Naidu, who is from Andhra Pradesh is favouring her rival Shailja Pujari, who is also from Andhra Pradesh.

The Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has come out in open to support Monika Devi. The IWF claimed that dope tests conducted by the SAI were illegal, as they were not done according to WADA’s guidelines. IWF Secretary B R Gulati alleged sabotage and mischief during the dope test. Upbeat over the latest developments, Shailja Pujari, has expressed hope that she would get a chance to go to Beijing, as Monika has tested positive.
