Will India get N-waiver? NSG to decide today

In the wake of the political impetus rising over the Indo-US nuclear deal once again in the country, the main question remains – will it finally get the go ahead at the NSG?

While some western diplomats told NDTV on Thursday that they are closer to a consensus, government sources have said that it is going down to the wire and the uncertainty remains.

They also said that with more countries now on India’s side, progress was made.

Four countries, New Zealand, Austria, Switzerland and Ireland are still being “very difficult.” Late last night Indian officials held last minute meetings with these countries. More meetings will be held on Friday morning.

Diplomatic sources have said that nuclear testing remains the big problem. The critics still want the consequences of testing spelt out clearly.

The US state department officials have said that they are hopeful for an NSG waiver for India on Friday, as this deal is an important step towards global nonproliferation
